Seashore Wall Mosaic

What you need: Bristol board (cut to size desired); metal and wooden lath (for framing); water paint; seashells, star fish, pebbles and stones, etc; cement; tracing paper.

What to do:

1. Purchase a sheet of Bristol board (available at art supply stores). Have the board cut to exact size desired based on the wall area you will be placing your finished mosaic.

2. Work out your design lines on tracing paper cut to the exact size of your board. When your design pleases you and you are ready to begin your creation make a second copy of the basic plan.

3. On your first design begin placing your seashell, starfish, pebbles, sand dollar, etc. onto your pattern design in a until you have achieved the exact artwork you want for your wall mosaic.

4. Frame a piece of metal lath with a wooden lath. Be sure the frame is higher than the board so you may pour your cement into the frame. If you are uncertain about this step inquire of your art supply store regarding how to prepare for this project.

5. Tint your cement with water paint until you have achieved the colors you desire to use for your mosaic. Tint one section of cement at a time. You may use muted or brighter colors for this project. Earth tones are normally used for seashore designs but be creative.

6. Using your second pattern as a guide, begin to pour your cement, 1 section at a time into the framed areas. Place your selection of shells, etc. into wet cement according to your design draft.

7. Allow to completely dry before hanging and use appropriate hooks for hanging heavy artwork. You may also let it rest upon a fireplace mantel or elsewhere.
