Primitive Tea Cozy

Equipment: Pencil. Ruler. Scissors. Paper for pattern. Straight pins. Sewing and embroidery needles. Sewing machine.

 

Materials: Heavy cotton fabric, light olive green, 36" wide, 3/8 yd. For lining, lightweight cotton fabric in matching color, 3/4 yd. Scraps of solid and print cotton fabric for appliqués as shown, or as desired. Matching sewing thread. Stitch Witchery® fusible web, 1/4 yd., 12" wide. Small amount of deep pink six-strand embroidery f1oss. Cotton or Dacron batting.

Directions: From olive green fabric, cut two pieces each 14 1/2" wide x 11 3/4 long. Cut four pieces the same from lining, and two of batting.

Enlarge appliqué pattern for tea cozy by copying on paper ruled in 1" squares. (1 square = 1")Flower and heart motif is used on both right and left side of pattern. Following ilustration, and using pattern, cut appliqué pieces from scraps of fabric. With embroidery floss, make French knots  for woman’s cheek, indicated by dots on pattern. Arrange appliqué pieces on one olive green piece for front, with lower ends of hearts 1" above bottom edge of fabric. Secure appliqués to front piece with fusing web, following package directions. With matching thread, and close zigzag stitch on sewing machine, stitch around each appliqué piece.

Place a piece of batting between two lining pieces with right sides of lining out. Stitch around all sides1/4" in from edges. Repeat with other two lining pieces and batting. Trim away edges of batting to stitching line. Place the two padded pieces together and stitch around both ends and one longer side (top), leaving bottom edge open. Place the two olive green pieces together with right sides facing; stitch around two ends and top longer side with 1/4" seams. Clip into seam a1lowance at corners. Turn right side out. Insert padded lining into olive green cover. Turn up both lining and cover separately for 1" at bottom; slip-stitch closed along bottom edge.
