Potato Chip Lid Ornament

Materials:

  •   3" plastic potato chip lid
  •   Thick craft glue
  •   Paper, pencil, scissors, ruler

Penguin:
 

  •   Felt: black, white, gold
  •   Chenille stems: red, green, white
  •   Two ¾" red pom-poms
  •   Two 15mm wiggle eyes
  •   12¼" length of 5/8" green grosgrain ribbon
  •   Pink powder blush, cotton swab, nylon thread

Reindeer:
 

  •   Felt: brown, tan
  •   3" x 5" piece of tan craft foam
  •   ½" red pom-pom
  •   Two 15mm wiggle eyes
  •   12½" length of 5/8" red gingham ribbon
  •   10" length of 1/8" green satin ribbon
  •   5/8" gold jingle bell
  •   Sewing needle, red thread

Snowman:
 

  •   Felt: white, orange
  •   2½" x 3¾" piece of black craft foam
  •   Two 5/8" black buttons
  •   ½" green button
  •   Five #2 black snaps
  •   15" length of 3/8" red plaid ribbon
  •   2 5/8" length of 3/8" green and red striped ribbon
  •   10" length of silver baby rickrack
  •   1" silver snowflake

Gingerbread:
 

  •   Felt: tan, dark pink
  •   Two 5/8" brown buttons
  •   7mm red pom-pom
  •   Brown embroidery floss; embroidery needle
  •   White baby rickrack
  •   12" length 5/8" red and white striped ribbon
  •   10" length of ¼" green satin picot ribbon
  •    (Optional: Black permanent fine-line marker)

 

Instructions:

 

General:
Trace and cut out patterns. Follow directions on patterns. Click here for the patterns in PDF format.

Penguin:
From black felt cut 3/8" x 10¼" strip. Glue strip around edge of lip. Glue head on top of lid. See photo. Glue face on head so bottom of face is even with bottom of head. Glue eyes on face. Hold beak where indicated by dash line on pattern. Glue bottom of beak on face below eyes. For cheeks, use cotton swab to apply blush on face. For earmuff band, twist red, green, and white chenille stems together. Cut band to measure 7"; discard remaining length. Glue band along side edges of lid. For muffs, glue one pom-pom on each end of band. Tie ribbon into a 2¼" wide bow; cut ribbon ends in a "V". Glue bow on center bottom of face. For hanging loop, cut a 10" length from nylon thread. Thread one end of nylon thread between earmuff band and top edge of head; knot ends. Apply dot of glue on knot to secure. Let dry.

Reindeer:
From brown felt cut a 3/8" x 10½" strip. Glue strip around edge of lip. Glue head on top of lid. See photo. Glue antlers on top of head. Glue two ears together for one ear. Repeat same for remaining ears. Glue ears on head below antlers. Glue muzzle on head so bottom of muzzle is ½" from bottom of head. For nose, center and glue pom-pom to top of muzzle. Glue eyes on head. Tie red gingham ribbon into a 3" wide bow; cut ribbon ends in a "V". Glue bow on center bottom of head. Sew jingle bell to bottom of bow know. (Optional: Glue bell to bottom of bow knot.) For hanging loop, glue ends of green ribbon together on back center top of lid. Let dry.

Snowman:
From white felt cut a 3/8" x 10½" strip. Glue strip around edge of lip. Glue head on top of lid. See photo. Glue hat on top of head. For hat band, glue green and red striped ribbon on hat as shown. Glue snowflake on hat band at right edge of hat. For eyes, glue black buttons on head. Glue nose on head. Separate snaps. (Note: Save top of snap for another project or discard.) Glue bottom of snaps on head for mouth. Tie red plaid ribbon into a 3" wide bow; cut ribbon ends in a "V". Glue bow on center bottom of head. Glue green button on center of bow. For hanging loop, glue ends of rickrack together on back center top of lid. Let dry.

Gingerbread:
From tan felt cut a 3/8" x 10½" strip. Glue strip around edge of lip. See photo. Use pencil to draw a smile on one side of head where indicated by dashed line. Using 6 strands of floss, sew mouth on head in a backstitch. (Optional: Use marker to draw smile.) Glue head on top of lid. For eyes, glue buttons on head. Glue cheeks to each corner of mouth. Glue pom-pom nose to center of head. Glue rickrack around top edge of head. Tie stripped ribbon into a 2½" wide bow; cut ribbon ends in a "V". Glue bow on center bottom of head. For hanging loop, glue ends of green ribbon together on back center top of lid. Let dry.
