Petite Candle Holder

Materials Needed 1 - 2 1/8 inch diameter, 6 ounce sauce can
1 - 2 5/8 inch diameter, 11 ounce soup can
1 - Blue votive candle, glass
28 - Blue Plexi drop beads
Bead wire
1 sheet metal screw Directions A: Top Crown: The top crown is made out of the 2 1/8" diameter can.

  1. Measure 2½" above the bottom rim of the can and mark around the can. This denotes the length of the spokes. Measure ½" above the bottom rim and mark around the can to define the depth of cut of spokes and strips.
  2. Divide the can into either equal spokes. Cut each spoke to the ½" point marked above and trim each spoke at the 2½" point marked.
  3. Divide each spoke into seven equal strips and cut each strip down to the ½" point marked.

B: Foot Crown: Use a 2-5/8" diameter can to make the foot crown.

  1. Measure 2½" above the bottom rim of the can to denote the length of spokes, and measure ½" above the bottom rim to define the depth of cut. Mark around the can at each measurement.
  2. Divide the can into ten equal spokes and cut each down to the ½" point marked above.
  3. Divide each spoke into seven equal strips and cut each strip down to the ½" point marked above.
  4. Bend the center three strips of each group down. Use the number 1 curling too, 1/8" in diameter, or long nose pliers for all curls on the foot crown. Curl the center strip up, rolling towards the can until it reaches to the bottom rim. Curl the strip to either side of the center in the same manner, then turn it at a right angle to the rim of the can and place as shown in figure 4 below. Repeat for each group.
  5. The outside two strips on each side of the group should be turned at a right angle to the can and formed around a ½" diameter dowel stick with the long nose pliers. Tie at the gathered point with a piece of scrap tin about 1/8" wide. Curl the outside strip on each side of the group to just above the tie and the center two slightly longer. See figure 5, and do each group in this manner.

C: Assembly and Decoration: The top crown and the foot crown can either be painted or left natural.

  1. Locate the center of the top and foot crowns. Punch a hole in the center or each with an ice pick or nail and hammer. The hole should be just large enough to get the sheet metal screw started. Place the top crown on the foot crown with the center holes lined up and fasten together with the sheet metal screw.
  2. use bead wire to hand a plexi-drop bean from the tie point of each cluster of the top crown. Also, use wire to hang a plexi-drop bead from the bottom of the center strip which is bent up toward the rim of the can rim, and, from the union of the outer strips of adjacent groups of the foot crown as in figure 2.
  3. Place votive candleholder in top crown and adjust curled feet of the foot crown so that the piece sets level and flat.
