Preparation:
Cut From 1/2" Flat 50 States At 7" Long
Make a paper pattern of the base. Cut out and fold into
quarters. With a pencil mark the base at the quarter marks. Place a stake at
each quarter mark. Evenly space 14 stakes into each section.
STEP 1: With the base and stakes flat on the table weave in 3
rows with 11/64" flat oval. Upset the stakes and following the line of the
divider, weave in two more rows of 11/64" flat oval. Be sure to allow enough
extra for the rim and lashing.
STEP 2: Using 3 pieces of #2 round reed - place a piece of
reed into 3 adjacent spaces. Pick up the one on the left and go over one stake
behind 2 and then back to the outside of the basket (just like tripe twine, but
to the inside of the basket). Weave 3 rows with the #2.
STEP 3: Weave in three rows of 11/64" flat oval.
STEP 4: Repeat Step 2.
STEP 5: Weave two rows with 11/64" flat oval.
Pack well and weave in one row wih 3/8" flat.
Cut and tuck the stakes on the outside of the basket into the
third row of weaving. Trim the inside stakes even with the top of the basket.
Rim the inside and outside of the basket with 58" flat oval.
Use seagrass for the rim filler and lash with 11/64" flat oval. ENJOY!
