Instructions

PREPARATION
1. Stain inside, edges and base with Oak Gel Stain. Paint outside Uniform Blue.

2. Transfer pattern and basecoat as follows:
Medium Flesh: face, hands, ankles;
Napa Red: night shirt;
Milk Chocolate: sides of ladder;
Driftwood: beard, candle snuffer;
Light Buttermilk: hat;
Antique White: candle (all sides);
Burnt Umber: ladder rungs and edges;
Lamp Black: snuffer handle.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Candle and Ladder
1. Float Terra Cotta to shade. This goes on left side (under ladder to shade), across bottom, under wax drips and as horizontal shadows from ladder and snuffer.

2. Tint candle with light floats of Fiery Red where elf’s night shirt would be reflecting into it.

3. Use Prudy’s Floater to side load with Cadmium Yellow and float in both sides of candle flame.

4. Tint candle flame at 2 and 7 o’clock positions with Fiery Red. Paint wick Lamp Black.

5. Float Cadmium Yellow across top of candle and ladder. Paint Scorching Yellow over all Cadmium Yellow areas.

Snuffer
1. Float Black Green on bell to shade. This goes across top of bottom edge and under each decorative bump at top. Also float it down right side.

2. Float Shimmering Silver on left side of bell and line handle with it. Use Best Liner to highlight with Shimmering Silver on bottom edge, on each top bump and as shine marks on bell.

3. Tint bell with floats of Fiery Red and Scorching Yellow.
Tint top of handle with Scorching Yellow.

4. Line black handle across top with Neutral Grey to highlight. Add Light Buttermilk stroke as shine mark.

Elf
1. Float Terra Cotta on face next to hat, backs of ankles and at wrists. Float DeLane’s Cheek Color on nose and across front of cheek to form. Add Lamp Black eye. Use Best Liner to paint Titanium White highlights on cheek and nose and to make tiny stroke eyebrow.

2. Flatten tip of Best Liner and use True Red to paint stripes on hat. Float Deep Midnight Blue across bottom.

3. Float Black Plum around sleeve of night shirt, at knee and at bottom left to shade. Highlight it in the non-shaded areas with Fiery Red.

4. Use Prudy’s Best Pouncer to side load with True Red and lightly pounce in slipper shapes. When dry, paint over with Fiery Red.

5. Use Best Liner and thinned Titanium White to paint simple beard and mustache lines. Add wisps of hair from under hat.

6. Float Cadmium Yellow, then Scorching Yellow on top of hat, on front of beard and over sleeves as candlelight.

Lettering
1. Use #4 flat brush and thinned Titanium White to paint each letter.

2. Use Best Liner (flatten the end) and Emperor’s Gold to paint offset shadows next to each letter.

3. Use Best Liner and thinned Emperor’s Gold to paint diagonal stripes on each letter.

4. Float Cadmium Yellow, then Scorching Yellow for candle glow at bottom of all letters.

Shadows
1. Use Payne’s Grey for shadows on front in area behind elf and candle, and on sides for shadow on right of each candle.

2. Use #4 flat brush to paint Payne’s Grey by each letter. If the letter is on the left side of the candle, the shadows will be on the left side; if the letters are on the right sides, the shadows will be there also.

Candle Glow
1. Use large flat brush and clean water to wet a huge area around the candle flames (do one at a time).

2. Quickly, using lots of paint, dab Cadmium Yellow in a circle around the flame.

3. Use the mop to pounce the color into place, then lightly pounce to refine and soften. Yellow often dries lighter than when it applies. Dry thoroughly, then repeat if necessary.

FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
Spray entire piece with Americana Matte Spray.
