One adult to supervise

  1. Measure and cut three 1/2-inch dowels into 12-inch pieces.

  2. Measure and cut two pieces of 1/2-inch wood into 6-inch by 6-inch squares. Use the carpenter's square to get straight edges so you know where to saw. Use spring clamps to hold the board while you are cutting (figure A). Sand rough edges as needed.

  3. Make a template out of cardstock the same size as the wood, 6 inches by 6 inches. Mark the placement for three 1/2-inch holes as follows: draw a line 1-1/2 inches from the bottom edge and from the right edge; measure in 1inch and 3-1/4 inches on bottom line; measure down 3 inches on right edge. These three points will form a triangle (figure B).

  4. Put a piece of masking tape on a 1/2-inch drill bit, leaving 1/4 inch exposed, so that you will not drill all the way through the wood. Tape cardstock to one piece of wood and drill the holes 1/4-inch deep (figure C). Flip the cardstock over and repeat for the second piece of wood. (You flip the cardstock so that when you are finished drilling, your wood pieces will be mirror images of each other.)

  5. Place a bead of wood glue on the end of dowels and insert one in each hole. Repeat for second end piece of wood (figure D). Use masking tape to hold it together while you work, if needed.

  6. Nail a finishing nail through the sides and into each dowel (figure E) to help secure it.

  7. Paint, stain or decorate as you like.

Tips:

  • Always have an adult supervise when you are using tools.

  • Wear goggles to protect your eyes when using tools.
