A Bed Time Snack

  • Brushes by Loew-Cornell or Royal - 3/4" flat; 1/4" filbert rake; assortment of flats and angulars - #4 to #10, #0 to #3 liner, deerfoot, old scruffy brushes
     
  • Supplies - graphite & tracing paper, pencil, paper towels, water container, palette or plastic plate, sea sponge, masking tape
     
  • Large wooden bowl or any other surface you prefer.

        Instructions
     
    Preparation
    1. Paint inside and outside of bowl with Prussian Blue.

    2. When dry, mask a 2" border on inside of bowl.

    3. Sponge area around masking tape with a medium value mix of Prussian Blue and Light Buttermilk. When dry, add more white to mix and sponge on the lighter value. Allow to dry overnight.

    4. Seal outside with one coat of Matte varnish. When dry, transfer pattern.

    5. Basecoat Santa's pajamas and cap with Santa Red. It will require multiple coats. Santa's beard, moustache, and fur remain the background blue. Basecoat face and lip with Medium Flesh.

    Painting Instructions
    1. CLOUDS: Load deerfoot or old scruffy brush with Light Buttermilk (tap most of the paint off on a paper towel) and paint the clouds. If you want to repeat applications of paint, you must wait for each coat to dry.

    2. Eyes: Base is Buttermilk, Iris is a mix of Prussian Blue and Light Buttermilk. Shade upper half with Prussian Blue and highlight left with Buttermilk. Paint pupil Black, with a Buttermilk highlight.

    3. Face: Shade with Light Cinnamon; darker shading is Light Cinnamon plus Burnt Sienna. For cheeks, wash with Santa Red, lighter values are Peaches 'n Cream, highlight is Buttermilk. For lips, shade with a wash of Santa Red, the dark shade is Napa Red, and highlight is Buttermilk. Inside mouth can be Black or Prussian Blue.

    4. Pajamas and cap: Shade with Napa Red, dark shade is Prussian Blue, highlight is Cadmium Red. Lines are Prussian Blue. Stitches are Glorious Gold.

    5. Cap Fur: Stipple with Light Buttermilk or Buttermilk, shade with Prussian Blue.

    6. Beard/Moustache: For the beard, use Buttermilk and a 1/4" filbert rake; start at bottom and work up. Layer the facial hair as though it were roof shingles. With liner, pull some loose strands around face, cap sides, and forehead.Stroke moustache with Buttermilk and highlight it with Light Buttermilk. For shading, use a thin wash of Prussian Blue - don't over do it.

    7. Use #6 flat and Santa Red to paint inside and outside checks. Right side highlight is drybrushed Glorious Gold. With a soft, 3/4" wash brush, float a wash of Prussian Blue under two rows of checks.

    8. With a #3 liner and Buttermilk, paint the letters. Float a tint of Santa Red on top of letters, and a tint of Prussian Blue across bottom. Use the liner to add a Glorious Gold line on left side of each letter.

    9. Stars are Glorious Gold with Buttermilk highlights. Tole strokes around stars are Buttermilk.

    10. With your finger, rub a small amount of Glorious Gold, Santa Red and Prussian Blue along the rim.

    Finishing Instructions
    Spray with Matte Sealer; allow drying between coats.
